Athletic Director Nick Karavedas
We are excited to welcome Nick Karavedas to the Western Christian family as our new High School Athletic Director. Nick brings over 16 years of teaching, coaching, and athletic administration experience to Western.
He began his teaching and coaching career at Calvary Chapel Christian School in Downey, serving there for nine years before moving to Twin Falls, Idaho. In Idaho, Nick was given the opportunity to serve as Athletic Director for a new Christian high school and asked to start that athletic program. In six years, that athletic program grew to over 20 athletic teams and included a new, state-of-the-art athletic complex.
Although Nick’s experience will benefit Lancer Athletics tremendously, his spiritual maturity will be an even greater asset. Nick understands that athletics can be a tremendous vehicle for spiritual growth and life lessons for the maturing student athlete.
Nick received his B.A. in Organizational Management & Spiritual Leadership from Colorado Christian University. He has been married for 28 years to his wife Joy, and has two grown children, Peter (married to Erin) and Ashley. Nick and his wife attend church at Rockharbor in Costa Mesa.
For Western Christian’s Solis, leadership matters

Despite the fact that Western Christian High School goes into just about every football game undersized and out-manned, the Lancers aren’t throwing in the towel.
That’s especially true for wide receiver Christian Solis.
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound senior missed the final three games of last season’s disappointing 1-9 finish with an injury, but he still led the Lancers with 612 yards receiving and five touchdowns on 35 catches.
In addition to his offensive talents,Solis will also lead the defensive backfield in what he and coach Scotty Kirkpatrick believe could be a playoff year at Western Christian.
“Our depth has always been our Achilles’ heel, and as odd as this may sound to others, I couldn’t have been more proud of a 1-9 team last year, because they left it all out on the field,” Kirkpatrick said.
“This year should be a much more competitive year for us, and Christian will be a big key if we’re to make the playoffs.”
Solis is considered by his coaches and teammates a natural talent with good speed and soft hands who can make the tough catch in a crowd.
“You’re never disappointed with Christian, because he does everything the right way, and as good as he’s been, I think he can be even better if he takes his body to where it’s never been before,” Kirkpatrick said.
“He’s a kid I count on so much on the field, but I’m even more proud of the person he’s become off it.”
After Kirkpatrick’s mom suffered a major stroke in the off season, it was Solis’ text messages of concern and support that helped lift his coach’s spirits through a very trying time.
“I love football, but my first concern is being a good Christian and serving God and being the person He and my father, Armando, expect me to be,” Solis said. “If I can make a positive difference in someone’s life, I’m doing my job, and it makes me feel good to help everyone I can.” More >

CJ Beatty Selected League MVP and ALL-CIF DIV. 5 1st Team
Jul 24th
Senior Captain CJ Beatty has continued the tradition of baseball excellence as he became the 7th Lancer in the last five years to be selected to the ALL CIF Team. According the June 21 press release by the CIF Southern Section office, he was honored on the 2010 Division 5 All-CIF First Team. He was also unanimously selected by the league’s coaches as the 3rd consecutive Lancer, and 4th in five years, to be chosen as the Christian League Most Valuable Player to go along with his 2009 League Pitcher of the Year honor.
This marks the second time Beatty was selected to the 1st team in his three year Varsity career as a Lancer. He was first given the honor in his 2008 sophomore campaign putting up astonishing numbers for a first time Varsity player. In his 2009 junior season the numbers were more impressive, while he humbly celebrated two of teammates receiving ALL-CIF bids.
Beatty’s return to the ALL-CIF team is only the fourth time a Western Christian baseball player has repeated the honor and the first time in the school’s 90 year history someone has repeated the first team. In both the 1991 and 1992 seasons infielder Mark Rogers was selected to the ALL-CIF 2nd Team. In 1964 Stephen Tange and Tom Orr were selected to the 2nd Team and then the 1st team in 1965.
While leading his team to three consecutive league titles en route to an impressive 21-5 season and a #6 ranking, Beatty’s individual statistics are what garnished him the ALL-CIF honor. Offensively he batted .478 on the year with 43 hits, 10 doubles, 4 triples, 7 home runs, 34 RBI’s, 35 runs scored and 9 stolen bases. On the mound he posted a 2.10 ERA in 70 innings pitches, giving up 38 hits, and striking out 98 batters while boasting a 9-3 record.
Seniors CJ Beatty and Troy Brown Selected to All Valley Team
Jun 29th
The awards for the 2010 Lancer baseball team kept coming last week as Senior CJ Beatty was selected to the 2nd Team All Valley and Senior Troy Brown was selected to the 3rd Team All Valley. The list is compiled of the best players in the Inland Valley and it does not discriminate between divisions.

Senior Troy Brown
Brown was a stalwart centerfielder for Western Christian who came to the Lancers as a transfer from Alta Loma. Defensively he was outstanding the entire year making great play after great play. His ability to track down balls in the gap frustrated opponents the entire season not to mention his knack for the diving catch.
Offensively, Brown was a difference making addition to the lineup as he hit .463 on the year and led the team with 39 runs batted in as he led the charge for the Lancers 3rd straight league title. According to Head Coach Mark Gabbard, “we have traditionally had very good centerfielders here, league MVP’s even. Troy has carried on that legacy and has put himself good company. He is one of the better ones I have coached at the college and high school level.”

Senior CJ Beatty
Senior CJ Beatty will add his 2nd Team All Valley award to a long list of others he has achieved in his high school career:
• 2008 (Sophomore) 1st Team All-CIF and 1st Team All-League
• 2009 (Junior) 1st Team All-League and League Pitcher of the Year
• 2010 (Senior) 1st Team All-CIF, League MVP, and Inland Valley All-Star
Beatty leaves the Lancer program as the most highly decorated baseball player in recent history and possibly ever. He has accepted an invitation to play at Azusa Pacific University next year where he will most notably receive a free education.
