Reading of Minutes:

No reading of minutes as the Secretary was not present.

Eloise Donante presented the treasurer’s report.  The auction proceeds went to the new athletic field.

Team Reports:

Volleyball Liaison Report (Dawn Pierini):

There will be a scrimmage against Whittier Christian on the first day of school for the JV and Varsity teams.

Cheer Liaison Report:

Nothing to report.

Cross Country Liaison Report (Vickie Meister):

For the first time, there will be a girls’ team, which requires a minimum of five (5).

The first meet will be in the middle of September.

Football Liaison Report (Lisa Bader):

There will be a scrimmage this Friday at Cantwell-Sacred Heart in Montebello.

The first two (2) home football games will be at Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga.

A question was brought up by Lorraine Baltierra regarding the presence of cheer at the Bishop football game.   She had a concern that they would not be there to support the football team.  Mr. Yovino explained that the administration had decided that cheer would not be there in an official capacity, but that the girls may go independently if they wish and cheer the game.  A possible caravan/carpool is being planned for the Bishop game.  Rob Meister suggested that if anyone wanted to stay the night in Bishop, they should reserve a room early because of high demand there.

Old Business:

Introduction of the new AD and Sports Field Report:

Mr. Nick Karavedes was introduced as the new Athletic Director, and reported on the sports field:

  • The portables have been removed.
  • WCHS has signed a letter of intent with a contractor (a faith-based contractor).
  • Spraying of the grass has begun to kill the grass.
  • More to come on water lines, grading, lighting, and playground demolition.
  • WCHS goal is to play the Homecoming game on the new field.  The Homecoming game is on October 15, and will be combined with the Claremont campus Harvest festival if the goal is met.
  • Issues that could get in the way of WCHS’ goal:  permits, delays, weather, other surprises.

Lorraine Baltierra  suggested looking into putting a cell phone tower on one of the lightposts of the field to produce income for WCHS, which could be significant.  Holly Wood suggested contacting Ray Musser, Upland City Council Member for help with this.

General Information for New Families:

Brian Mizell read the Purpose section of the By-Laws for the new Booster families present:

  • Fundraising
  • Stimulate interest amongst students, families, and the community for WCHS
  • Brainstorming  – we need lots of families to participate to gain new ideas and to better communicate
  • Opportunities to serve – committees, etc.

Sign-ups for games:

Nick Karavedes explained the goal that parents wouldn’t have to work the games their children were playing in.  For example, JV parents would help out at Varsity games, and vice versa.  However, football has only one team at this time, and this was brought up as a concern.  Questions were brought up about the responsibilities of security and apparel.

New Business:

Fall Yard Sale, Sept 25

This fundraiser is being chaired by Nick Karavedes.  Each team is responsible for selling six (6) spots.  Twenty (20) spots have been sold to date.  Nick will contact other teams’ liaisons regarding the yard sale and their responsibilities.

Mr. Prince explained a nonprofit thrift store that he is starting in Irwindale.  The donated items that are left over from the yard sale could be picked up and brought to the thrift store and sold there.  70% of the profits would go to WCHS.

Brian reiterated that only Boosters will be able to sell food/drinks at the yard sale; teams may not.

Brick Program:

Jeanne Pandzic reviewed the brick program for those in attendance.

Christmas Tree Sale:

Beth Pujol reviewed the Christmas Tree sale for this year.  Sat., Dec. 4th is the pickup date.  We need lots of help with this fundraiser.  The representative from the tree company will be at our September 20th meeting, so it is important for everyone to be in attendance.

Golf Tournament:

Brian Mizell reported that the tournament will be on Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at Sierra Lakes in Fontana.  We need companies to buy spots.  Price will be approximately $150/person.  We will have formal information at the next meeting.

Decoration of Booster Room Report:

Jeanne Pandzic reported that the Booster meeting room was painted over the summer, and that the bulletin boards are decorated and available for the team liaisons to decorate however they wish, with photos, schedules, etc.

Questions from members:

  • Why was Fall Meet the Teams so early this year?—–Mr. Yovino explained that for this year, there was a change because there was no “free” week this year on the calendar, and that it was harder to fit in.
  • Is throwing candy by the cheerleaders allowed at the football games any longer?—–Mr. Yovino explained that the administration decided there were too many issues with the candy (clean-up, budget for candy, and safety), and they are open to new ideas for getting the crowd excited.
  • Do we have a date yet for Winter Meet the Teams?—–Not yet.
  • Holly Wood brought up the Upland Christmas Parade, and its importance for getting WCHS involved in the local community.  It is on Sat., Dec. 4, in the evening (the same day as the Christmas Tree pick-up).

Closing Prayer:

Rob Meister closed the meeting in prayer.
