Chavira To Attend Azusa Pacific on Baseball Scholarship
Covina , CA Today Western Christian Lancer Virgil Chavira signed a Letter of Intent to accept a baseball scholarship offer from Head Coach Paul Svagdis of Azusa Pacific University . Chavira is a Senior at Western this year and is part of the home school program. He states, It is exciting. My parents are really happy because it is a Christian school close to home. He signed the scholarship today at 1:45PM in Principal Vance Nichols' office sealing the deal on where he will be attending college and continuing his playing career.
A month ago he attended a workout at Azusa Pacific in which he proceeded to impress the coaches with his athletic ability. A week later he was taken out to dinner by Coach Svagdis to discuss any plans the Cougar program could have in store for him. Chavira liked what he heard and anxiously awaited an offer that came through this week. He was offered a very favorable scholarship that could not be refused. When Coach Gabbard was asked to comment he stated, I am extremely happy for Virgil. Now he can just go play and not have to worry about next year. I think APU and Coach Svagdis are a good fit for him and the school is definitely a good fit for him. It will be fun to watch him progress over the next four years.
This year Chavira looks to complete a Lancer team that is projected to have a strong showing. He will primarily play short stop and also be on the mound for Western Christian. Azusa Pacific looks to have him focus on short stop for his first two years and then maybe take advantage of his arm strength on the mound after that.
