WESTERN CHRISITAN CHEER WINS WITH HEART
2008 started with a bang for the Western Christian Cheer squad as they traveled to Florida for the Fellowship of Christian Cheerleading (FCC) National Championships. They competed this year in the Varsity all music division. The competition was fierce, as squads from all over the United States showed up ready to take the crown. In the first round a 35 member team from Raleigh, North Carolina came through as the favorite. Other teams from Florida, Georgia, Kentucky and Louisiana also had strong showings that helped them to push through to the finals round. Your Lady Lancers performance in the first round was not enough to qualify them for the finals. Instead, they were placed into the Competitor’s Cup with three other teams. The winner of the Competitor’s Cup would receive the last spot in the finals round with a chance to compete for the National Championship. Needless to say, no Competitor’s Cup winner in the 19 year history of FCC has ever come back to win the National Championship.
The squad performed their routine in the Competitor’s Cup Saturday morning and, after having a flawless performance, they took first place and were given the chance to compete for the National Championship with five other squads. The excitement was in the air as Western was the first team to take the floor in the finals round. The girls showed an immense amount of poise and pride as they delivered a spirited and emotional performance. The squad then had to sit through the performances put on by the other five competitors. All of the other teams performed their routines as well as they had the day before and in some cases even better. During the awards ceremony they announced the names of all squads and where they finished. They started with sixth place, which went to Florida Christian. Fifth then went to Dade Christian. Fourth was taken by Christian Academy of Louisville. At this point Western realized that they had placed higher than they could have even imagined as they were one of three teams left. They then announced that Pinewood Christian had taken third. As the excitement reached its pinnacle the announcer stated that Second Place belonged to the favored team, North Raleigh Christian and that history had been made as the National Championship belonged to the winner of the Competitor’s Cup, Western Christian High School, your Lady Lancers.
As if taking the National Championship was not enough all of the teams that were on the podium with Western during the awards presentation stood and gave the Lady Lancers a standing ovation for their accomplishment. It was truly a proud moment for Western. The championship was the culmination of a journey that began one year ago when Western took second at the National Competition. Congratulations ladies.
